Understanding the Cambridge B1 (PET) Format

The Cambridge B1 PET exam is a logical step in your language learning journey, proving you can communicate in English in practical, everyday situations. Proper Cambridge B1 preparation requires familiarizing yourself with the four distinct papers that make up the exam.

Reading (45 mins)

Consists of 6 parts and 32 questions. You will need to read signs, short messages, and longer factual texts, demonstrating you can understand the main points and detailed meaning.

Writing (45 mins)

Consists of 2 parts. Part 1 requires writing a short email (about 100 words). Part 2 gives you a choice between writing an article or a story (about 100 words).

Listening (30 mins)

Consists of 4 parts and 25 questions. You will listen to short monologues, interviews, and everyday conversations to identify specific information and attitudes.

Speaking (12 mins)

Taken with another candidate. Includes 4 parts: introductory questions, discussing a situation with your partner, describing a photograph, and a general conversation.

Scoring Criteria: What Constitutes a Pass?

The Cambridge English Scale is used to report results. For the B1 Preliminary exam, the scores range from 120 to 170.

  • 160–170 (Grade A): Pass with Distinction (Demonstrates ability at B2 level).
  • 153–159 (Grade B): Pass with Merit.
  • 140–152 (Grade C): Pass (Demonstrates B1 level competence).
  • 120–139: Level A2 (You will receive a certificate stating you demonstrated A2 ability).

Examiners assess your ability to use a range of everyday vocabulary, apply basic grammatical structures accurately (like present perfect, conditionals, and comparatives), and communicate your message clearly without causing confusion for the listener or reader.

Common Mistakes to Avoid at B1 Level

Many students struggle to pass the B1 exam because they make avoidable errors. As a Cambridge B1 tutor, I help students identify and eliminate these common mistakes:

  • Not answering all points in the Writing task: In Part 1 (the email), you are given four specific notes to respond to. Missing even one will significantly lower your score.
  • Poor time management in Reading: Spending too much time on difficult vocabulary in Part 4 (multiple-choice reading) and running out of time for the rest of the paper.
  • Basic grammatical errors: Frequent mistakes with third-person 's' (he goes, not he go), irregular past tense verbs, and incorrect prepositions of time (in, on, at).
  • Remaining silent in Speaking Part 2: When discussing a situation with your partner, you must actively participate, ask their opinion, and respond to their ideas, not just state your own.

Effective Study Strategies & Actionable Tips

To succeed in the Cambridge B1 writing task and other papers, you need targeted strategies. Here is how we will approach your preparation:

Practical Examples for B1 Success

1. Writing Part 1 (Email) Strategy:

Always use appropriate opening and closing formulas.
Example: Start with "Hi [Name]," or "Dear [Name],". End with "Best wishes," or "See you soon,". Ensure you use linking words like because, so, although, and but to connect your ideas.

2. Speaking Part 3 (Picture Description):

Don't just list objects. Use present continuous to describe actions and prepositions of place.
Example: "In the background, there is a tall building. On the left, a woman is drinking coffee. She looks relaxed."

3. Reading Part 5 (Multiple Choice Cloze):

This part tests vocabulary and grammar. Focus on learning collocations (words that go together).
Example: Know that we "make a mistake" (not "do a mistake") and "take a photo" (not "make a photo").
